2The Dell PowerEdge R550 is a dual-processor 2U rack server aimed at businesses that need solid compute power without paying a premium for a full enterprise-class platform. It performs well in virtualisation, database workloads, ERP/CRM systems, backup, and hybrid environments - anywhere a single-processor server is no longer enough, but a larger platform like the R750 would be overkill.
The R550 supports two Intel Xeon Silver or Gold series processors - for example, Silver 4310, 4410, and Gold 5317, 5320, 6326, and 6330. Silver models are a sensible choice when working within a tighter budget, while Gold processors offer higher clock speeds, larger cache, and better performance under demanding parallel workloads.
Configurations available through Hardware Direct start at 32 GB of RAM and go up to 128 GB, with the option to expand to 1 TB. The server also offers up to 16 x 2.5" drive bays - more than enough to build an efficient RAID 10 array while leaving room for backups and snapshots.
Every configuration comes with installed processors, RAM, SSDs, a RAID controller (h455 or H755), two redundant power supplies, rack rails, and an iDRAC 9 remote management module. You can also request pre-shipment services such as RAID configuration, partitioning, and operating system installation - all completed before the server is dispatched.
Yes - this is one of the primary use cases for this model. With two processors, a large RAM capacity, and PCIe Gen4 support, a single R550 can take over workloads previously spread across two or three older machines - including virtualisation, business applications, network services, and backup - without resource contention.
The R750 is a higher-tier platform - it offers more PCIe slots, supports faster processors from the upper Gold range, and provides greater expandability overall. It is the right fit for environments with very demanding requirements. Choose the R550 when you need dual-processor performance and flexibility, but your current workloads do not yet justify the higher purchase and operational costs of the R750.
