The Dell PowerEdge R740xd comes with 12 drive bays as standard, with select configurations supporting up to 24 - available in both 2.5" and 3.5" form factors. This flexibility lets you mix drive types: fast SSDs, traditional SAS drives, and in NVMe-capable configurations, U.2 drives as well, giving you plenty of options when designing your storage layout.
Yes - the R740xd is available in configurations with a backplane that supports U.2 NVMe drives. Throughput is significantly higher than with traditional SATA or SAS, making it a strong choice wherever read and write speeds genuinely matter.
Hardware Direct offers configurations with Intel Xeon Silver processors (including the 4110, 4114, and 4116) for environments where lower power consumption is a priority, as well as Xeon Gold options (including the 5120, 6130, and 6148) for demanding multi-threaded workloads. All configurations are dual-socket.
Yes - Hardware Direct sells the R740xd both as new hardware and as refurbished, off-lease units. Every unit is tested in-house before shipping and comes complete with a RAID controller, dual power supplies, rack rails, and full cabling, so you can get it up and running straight out of the box.
The R740xd is a strong fit for environments where storage capacity and compute power are equally important: virtualisation, databases, enterprise NAS, backup infrastructure, and applications that demand high core counts. The 2U form factor, redundant power supplies, and iDRAC 9 Enterprise provide a solid foundation for production environments.
The key difference is drive bay count - the R740xd offers significantly more (up to 24) and was designed with storage-intensive use cases in mind. The R740 has a smaller storage footprint but can be more compact in other respects. If storage capacity is just as important to you as CPU performance, the R740xd is the right choice.
