It depends on the type of simulation. For structural analysis (Mechanical), CPU performance and the amount of RAM matter most. For fluid flow simulations (Fluent), a high core count and memory bandwidth are important. For some calculations a GPU can speed things up, but not all solvers use it. Choose a configuration that suits the size of the models you work with.
Memory requirements grow with model complexity and mesh density. For smaller projects 64 GB is usually enough, while large FEA and CFD models often need 128 GB or more. If the solver runs out of memory, it starts using the disk, which significantly slows down calculations. That's why it's better to have some RAM to spare.
For most solver calculations, the processor is the most important component: core count, clock speed and memory performance all matter. The graphics card handles smooth performance in the model window and in post-processing, and in selected solvers it can also speed up calculations. GPU support depends on the module and software version, so check the ANSYS documentation.
ANSYS runs calculations in parallel, so more cores usually shorten simulation time, but the gain is not linear. Memory bandwidth and the type of analysis also play a role. The number of cores you can use also depends on your license, so check its terms before choosing a processor.
A fast NVMe SSD is best, because the solver writes and reads large temporary files and results. It speeds up project loading and any calculations that rely on the disk. It's also a good idea to have a separate, larger drive or disk array for archiving results, which quickly take up a lot of space.
