Houdini runs best on a workstation with a powerful, high-clock-speed CPU, because most simulations and procedural operations rely mainly on the CPU. You also need plenty of RAM and a fast NVMe drive to store your simulation caches. The graphics card mainly affects viewport performance and GPU rendering.
It depends on the type of work. For procedural modeling and viewport work, high single-core clock speed matters most. Simulations that scale well and CPU rendering benefit from more cores. That's why we choose the processor based on whether you mostly build scenes or run heavy simulations and renders.
Simple scenes need less memory, but fluid, smoke, fire and particle simulations can use a great deal of it, especially at high resolutions. If you work with these kinds of effects, plan for plenty of headroom and leave room for future expansion. When you run out of RAM, the system starts using the disk, which slows down calculations considerably.
In Houdini, the CPU usually determines how long your work takes, because it handles most simulations and geometry operations. The graphics card matters for smooth viewport performance and for GPU render engines such as Karma XPU, Redshift or Octane. The amount of VRAM determines how complex a scene you can fit into a GPU render.
Yes, the configuration can be tailored to the type of work you do: visual effects, simulation, motion design or rendering. Tell us which render engines you use and how large your scenes are. Based on that, we'll balance the CPU, RAM, graphics card and drives so your system has no bottlenecks.
