Lenovo ThinkSystem or Dell PowerEdge – which to choose as your company server? A comparison for the IT department

Bad news for anyone looking for a simple answer: under the bonnet these servers are almost twins – the same Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC, the same DDR5 memory, the same NVMe drives. The difference lies elsewhere: in the management software, the licensing model and how the hardware behaves after three years. Below we take both apart – with data from ITIC, IDC and the VMmark benchmark – so that you can choose knowingly rather than by the logo on the front.

Lenovo ThinkSystem and Dell PowerEdge – how do they really differ?

Let's start with the origins, because they explain a lot. Dell PowerEdge is a brand that has been on the market for decades, built around its own management ecosystem. Lenovo ThinkSystem has a different pedigree – in 2014 Lenovo bought IBM's x86 server division and took over with it the engineering team that had previously built mainframe-class machines. That is still visible in the reliability statistics today.

At the specification level the two families are practically interchangeable. The same class of processors, the same ECC memory, the same network cards. A server with an identical CPU and RAM will perform similarly regardless of the logo – and anyone who claims otherwise is selling you a narrative, not hardware. The real differences only begin with day-to-day operation.

Which server is more reliable – ThinkSystem or PowerEdge?

Here Lenovo has the advantage, and it is not marketing. According to the ITIC 2024 study (a survey of around 1,950 organisations, with the report hosted by a manufacturer – worth noting), the latest versions of ThinkSystem, especially mission-critical models such as the SR950 V3, have drawn level with fully loaded IBM Power10 systems and achieve “six to seven nines” of availability. Translated into time: around 31.5 seconds of unplanned downtime per server per year.

Dell PowerEdge sits in the “four to five nines” category, that is 99.99–99.999% – and that is still a very good result. The most interesting difference, however, concerns not the average but the long outages, the ones that really hurt:

Short outages happen to both brands. The difference becomes visible with outages longer than four hours. Data: ITIC 2024.

What do those “nines” mean?This is shorthand for the percentage of availability over a year. Five nines (99.999%) is about 5 minutes of downtime a year, six nines (99.9999%) – only 31.5 seconds. Every further nine is ten times harder and ten times more expensive.

Before you rewrite the order in favour of Lenovo, though: those 7.5 percentage points of difference matter if an hour of downtime costs you real money. With a file server for ten people – not necessarily. With an SQL database serving production – very much so.

iDRAC or XClarity – which server management is more convenient?

For an IT department this is probably the most important practical difference in the whole comparison – and the one most often forgotten when pricing things up.

BMC, iDRAC, XCC – what do these abbreviations mean?Every server has a BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) inside – a tiny, independent computer that lives its own life alongside the main system. It lets you view the server's screen remotely, install an operating system and restart the machine, even when the main system is down. Dell calls it iDRAC, Lenovo – XClarity Controller (XCC), HPE – iLO. Same role, different trade names.

Functionally the two are comparable today. iDRAC9 is a mature industry standard – remote console, virtual media, detailed diagnostics, lifecycle management, LDAP integration and two-factor authentication. XCC2 on ThinkSystem V3 has closed the gap and has a modern HTML5 interface that many administrators find more convenient than iDRAC. Dell gives more granular control, Lenovo – a more pleasant experience.

The catch is in the licences, and on both sides. By default PowerEdge comes with iDRAC Express, and the remote console and virtual media require an Enterprise licence – bought either with the order or later. At Lenovo the mechanism is a twin: most ThinkSystem models come with XCC Standard, and functions such as remote control or remote system installation via XClarity Administrator require the Advanced or Enterprise level, unlocked with a key.

The practical conclusion that will save you some nerves: check the BMC licence level in the quote before you accept it. A server without a remote console licence means a trip to the server room with every more serious failure. Is ThinkSystem faster than PowerEdge?

With an identical processor – there are no dramatic differences, and it is worth knowing that before someone shows you a chart from a single benchmark. This is best seen in VMmark 4, the standard virtualisation performance test. Both machines configured with the same Xeon 6787P processor came out almost identical.

What do “tiles” mean in VMmark?VMmark measures virtualisation by loading the server with packages of virtual machines called tiles. More tiles means more VMs handled at once, and a higher point score means better performance per unit of load. That is why a server can have a lower score with a larger number of tiles – and not be worse at all.

The spread of these numbers shows the character of the two brands nicely. Lenovo achieved a higher point score (3.39) at a lower load, Dell handled more tiles (4.2) with a score of 3.34. In other words: Lenovo squeezes more performance out of a unit, Dell scales density better. For an IT department this translates into a simple rule – the difference is within the margin of error, so it is not worth basing a decision on it. Specific components can matter more, such as the RAID controller: in an earlier generation Lenovo offered a controller with more cache and more SAS lanes than Dell's equivalent, which shortened array rebuild times.

Availability of hardware and parts – why does market scale matter?

This argument rarely makes it into comparisons, and for an IT department it can be decisive three years after the purchase. The larger a brand's market share, the easier it is to get parts, the cheaper the off-lease hardware and the wider the choice on the second-hand market. Dell, with a 16.5% share and revenue of USD 20.3 billion, leads decisively, driven by orders for AI servers. Lenovo takes third place with a 4.6% share and revenue of USD 5.6 billion, growing by 36.5% year on year. The practical consequence: PowerEdge is easier to find in a recertified configuration, spare components are quicker to assemble and a replacement is simpler to source years later. What matters more than the brand? Three things that really determine how satisfied you are a year later:

  • The BMC licence level. Without a remote console, every failure means a trip to the server room.
  • The scope of support. A basic warranty is not the same as next-business-day on-site service – check exactly what the contract covers.
  • Headroom for expansion. Free RAM slots, drive bays and PCIe lanes decide whether in two years you add resources or buy a new server.

Which server is better – Lenovo ThinkSystem or Dell PowerEdge?

There is no single answer. ThinkSystem has the advantage in reliability statistics (fewer long outages), PowerEdge in availability of parts and the breadth of the offer, including recertified. With an identical processor and memory the performance of the two is comparable.

How does iDRAC differ from XClarity Controller?

It is the same type of chip – a BMC, that is an independent controller for managing a server remotely. Dell calls it iDRAC, Lenovo XClarity Controller. Functionally they are comparable; in both, the full capabilities (remote console, virtual media) require a higher licence level to be purchased.

Is it worth paying extra for an iDRAC Enterprise or XCC Advanced licence?

In most cases yes. Without it you have no remote console and no way of installing a system over the network, which with every more serious failure means physical access to the server. It is a licence that pays for itself with the first incident.

Is Lenovo ThinkSystem cheaper than Dell PowerEdge?

Lenovo usually positions itself as the option with a better price-to-performance ratio, but the real difference depends on the configuration, the management licences and the scope of support. Compare quotes in full configuration, not base prices alone.

Do both servers support VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox?

Yes. Both families are standard x86 architecture with certifications for the popular hypervisors and operating systems. Software compatibility is not a criterion for choosing between these brands.

Which server should you choose for virtualisation?

Both will do well – the VMmark benchmark results for comparable models differ within the margin of error. More important than the brand are the number of cores, the amount of memory, the management licence and the headroom for expansion.
